Hello all! Thanks for checking in for the final time in 2011. At this time of the year, most people like to look back at the year that was, and I'm no different. Here are some of my thoughts from 2011.
*Tough year for the Gateway Grizzlies, but an exciting year for me as the lead broadcaster for the first time. I was given the chance to take over for the great Joe Pott, and it was an unbelievable experience. After spending an entire summer traveling and watching baseball every night of the week, as crazy as it seems, that's how I want to spend every summer the rest of my life. There is nothing like it.
*The return of Saint Louis University Men's Basketball. If you know me at all, you know that I'm a huge SLU basketball fan..always have been. Billikens basketball is back and on a whole new level..can't wait to see what 2012 brings.
*St. Louis Cardinals 2011 World Series. With the Grizzlies season taking place @ the same time as the Cardinals season, I'll be the first to admit that I don't get to follow the Cardinals as much as I used to. Therefore, I'm not as big of a fan as I used to be, but I will always bleed Cardinals red. What a run 2011 was for Tony La Russa's club. It was fun to watch.
*Getting the chance to call Division I follow College Basketball for a full season has been a real thrill in 2011. Joe Pott and SIUE gave me the opportunity to join the broadcast team and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Basketball is my passion and the sport that I feel is my best play-by-play wise. Not to mention, I get to work with Joe every broadcast, which is a true joy. Here's hoping SIUE Men's and Women's Basketball have a great 2012.
*2011 was a big year for me @ McKendree University. Early in the year I began calling Hockey and Baseball for the first time and late in the year I called my first football game (McKendree win on homecoming against Trinity International University..I'll never forget that game) and became the PA Voice of McKendree Men's Basketball under legendary head coach Harry Statham. I also was asked to be the PA Voice of McKendree Football in 2012. It has been a great ride already with a great University. I'm Announcing Football, Basketball, Soccer, Hockey and Baseball. As long as they keep on giving me the microphone, I will continue to represent the University in a positive manner. They have made me feel welcome and I know 2012 will be a great year to be a Bearcat.
That's my list..not very long, but I got to some points I wanted to cover. As far as 2012 you ask? I want a lot of things to happen. I want to continue to improve every broadcast, add more content to my personal website (www.AdamYoungOnTheAir.com), call even more sporting events and catch that 'big break' as they say, but one thing has been on my mind ever since the 2011 Grizzlies season ended on September 4th. I'm hungry, greedy and anxious..I want to see a GREAT 2012 season for the Grizzlies. The fans deserve it, the coaching staff deserves it and the players deserve it. I want to see a Frontier League Championship for the Gateway Grizzlies in 2012. I hope that isn't too much to ask. Enjoy the rest of 2011 and make 2012 a great one. I know I will try my best to do so. Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas
Hello all! First off, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope everyone had a great Christmas with family and friends. With the end of the year approaching, I've started to think a lot about 2012 and what it has to offer.
For the Gateway Grizzlies, it's going to be a different year, but in a good way. Players and fans will have to adjust to a new playing surface. I've written about it often on this blog and will thoroughly enjoy watching the progress over the next couple of weeks. The turf installation process has begun (picture during the first day is above) and it should be completed around mid-January or so.
I'll be posting updates throughout the process. Once again, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Here's to 2012 being a GREAT year!

Field Turf/Boling & Hart Returning
Many Grizzlies fans have been stopping by GCS Ballpark to check on the progress of the new field...I'm happy to report that starting next week, the process of laying down the field turf is expected to begin (barring weather issues). The new field should be ready to go by mid-January. I will post pictures consistently once they start laying down the turf..should be an exciting time here @ GCS Ballpark. Feel free to come by the ballpark and check out the progress during the holiday season!
GWY Manager Phil Warren re-signed two more players this week..JR Boling (Pictured: Courtesy of Paul Baillargeon/ActionImaging.com) and Jett Hart are coming back for another season. Boling is a right-handed hurler who had an injury plagued 2011 season, but still managed to appear 20 times out of the Grizzlies bullpen. He compiled a 4.40 ERA. Hart was a late season addition, via trade from Joliet. He showed promise batting out of the Grizzlies leadoff spot and playing in centerfield. Both should be contributors come 2012.
Weather permitting, turf will begin to cover the playing surface @ GCS Ballpark next week..I'll have pictures for you. Check back for that. Happy Holidays!

Grizzlies 2012 Schedule Breakdown
Hello all! 158 days until opening day! Yes, I know that is far away, but I'm still in the baseball mood and with the recent release of the schedule, I thought it would be a good time to break down the Grizzlies 2012 schedule.
While there could still be some minor changes, the schedule is pretty much set (even game times). The Grizzlies open up the exhibition season May 9th @ home vs. the Southern Illinois Miners. GWY will play six EXH games before opening up for good on Friday, May 18th against the reigning Frontier League Champion, Joliet Slammers.
The first half of the season figures to be a tough one. Gateway will spend the majority of the first half on the road, especially in June, when they play 18 of their 28 games away from GCS Ballpark. The Grizzlies first road trip of the season is also a tough one, taking them through Washington AND London, Ontario, Canada May 22-27.
It appears if the Grizzlies can stay in the hunt until August, the schedule is favorable down the stretch. GWY spends 11 of their first 14 games in August @ home, with an off day mixed in. Also, six of the final nine games of the season are @ GCS Ballpark. One of the biggest differences IMO is the fact that the Grizzlies will only get three days off during the All-Star Break. GWY will play on the Thursday of All-Star week vs. Florence (only game in the league that day) and get that Sunday off instead.
We could get into it much more, but those are some of the things that jumped out at me. Schedule is finished, roster is shaping up and the field turf is about to be installed @ GCS Ballpark..now all we need is some games. Once again, 158 days until Opening Day on May 18th vs. the Joliet Slammers.
I'll be checking back in this week with field turf progress..Go Grizzlies!

Gateway Catcher Landon Hernandez Returns
Hello all! As promised, I'm back with some Grizzlies news. Grizzlies catcher Landon Hernandez is returning for a third season (All photos courtesy of Paul Baillargeon/ActionImaging.com). Hernandez was one of the top hitters for the Grizzlies during the 2011 season. Below is a link to one of my 18 Landon Hernandez home run calls from 2011!
HERNANDEZ HOMERS IN EVANSVILLE
Hernandez, 24, enjoyed a breakout 2011 season. He batted .250 with 18 homers and 46 RBI, while being named the Gateway Grizzlies Fan Favorite. In 2010, Hernandez homered just two times in limited action as the team’s backup catcher. The 6-1 230-pound backstop took over starting duties in 2011 and played in 86 of the team’s 95 games. Hernandez got off to a blistering start to the season, ran into a mid-season funk, but finished strong.
“Landon had an outstanding year for us both offensively and defensively,” Grizzlies Manager Phil Warren said. “With that said, I still think we haven’t seen the best of Landon Hernandez. I think he has even more to offer in 2012.”
Despite his great offensive numbers, Hernandez could be considered more of a defensive catcher. A Palm Desert, CA native, Hernandez was the top defensive catcher in the Frontier League, throwing out over 40 percent of attempted base stealers.
“Not only does he throw out runners at a high rate, but he also handles the pitchers very well,” Warren commented. “Our pitchers enjoy throwing to him and he has great instincts behind the plate.”
Hernandez is currently playing winter baseball in Australia and excelling. He was named to the South Australian All-Star team. Hernandez returns in 2012 as one of the team’s top offensive threats. With the trade of Charlie Lisk to River City, Hernandez has the most returning home runs. Hernandez will also be searching for his first All-Star appearance when the 2012 Frontier League All-Star game takes place in Normal, IL in early July.
“Landon is an All-Star caliber player,” Warren remarked. “When healthy and performing at the top of his game, he is the best catcher in the Frontier League. He’s still young, but is considered a veteran to us because he has so much experience. He’s a mature player and person. We are thrilled to be bringing him back for another season.”

Hello all! It was a busy week for me behind the microphone with seven college basketball games during the week, including four games over a two-day span (Friday and Saturday). Early in the week I was @ McKendree and SIUE for Men's Basketball..Friday and Saturday I had four games @ three different Universities (Washington University-St. Louis, McKendree and an SIUE road game @ SIU Carbondale). I was also battling a horrible cold, which luckily I've been able to get rid of for the most part..I'd say I'm back to about 85 percent!
With all of that said, Saturday was the highlight as the SIUE Women's Basketball team continued their hot start to the season w/ an overtime thriller against sister school, SIUC. Cougars won 70-60 in OT..a BIG win for the program AND the University. Thanks to a Raven Berry 10-footer that beat the horn in regulation, I got to call a buzzer-beater that sent us to OT. I'm extremely excited for the week ahead..should be a great one. Tuesday night it's SIUE Women vs. Bradley followed by SIUE Men vs. Ball State. The weekend could be a busy one as well on the road...I will most likely be on the call of SIUE Women @ Depaul Friday and then @ IPFW on Sunday. It's either that or alongside Joe Pott for SIUE Men @ Home on Saturday. Either way, more and more college basketball. I might also try to make it over to Chaifetz on Wednesday to check out the SLU Billikens in person for the first time this season..anyone who knows me is aware that I'm a HUGE SLU fan..always have been! The Billikens have Vermont on Wednesday.
I'll be checking back in this week with some Grizzlies news most likely. Take care!

Mark Brackman Returns For His Fourth Season
Hello All! Today is a big day for the Grizzlies with the announcement that Gateway 'Ace' Mark Brackman is coming back! This is huge on-field news for the Grizzlies, who are searching for their first playoff berth since 2008 (All pictures are courtesy of Paul Baillargeon/ActionImaging.com).
Brackman (pronounced Brock-man) had an injury plagued 2011 season, but still finished with seven wins and the best ERA in the Frontier League at 2.15. He's a two-time FL All-Star and in my eyes the top pitcher in the league. When Brackman toes the rubber, fans fully expect the Grizzlies to win..it's that simple. You almost know exactly what you're going to get out of the tall righty from Kansas City, MO. He works quickly, goes deep into games, is never phased by runners on base and always gives him team a chance to win.
Brackman is the Ace of the Grizzlies...no doubt about it. Even when the Grizzlies had Aaron Shafer (now at Double-Mississippi in the Braves Org.), Mark was still the ace. Even when he doesn't have his 'best' stuff, he still finds a way to get the job done. His command is impeccable and his stuff is as good as anyones in the FL.
There are certain guys you see, whether it be pitchers or position players, that stand out...Brackman is one of those. If he got picked up by an MLB Club next year, I wouldn't be surprised. Mark is 26, which is the age that Scott Patterson was when he left the Grizzlies for affiliated ball. The rest was history for Patterson, who made his Major League debut in '08 with the Yankees. Brackman has spent some time in affiliated ball. He was drafted in '07 by the Tigers and pitched in their system through '08. He was a thrower then, not a pitcher. Brackman has a big frame (6-7 230) and back then he was trying to blow fastballs by people. He learned the hard way and found out in game situations that it wouldn't work, even against player's in the low levels of Minor League Baseball. Mark was the same way when he pitched for GWY in '09. He struggled, losing 10 games and barely getting his ERA below five to finish the season. Then something clicked. He became a pitcher and started to locate as well as anyone in the league. '10 was a career year for him..13-4 and the runner up for Pitcher of the Year honors in the league. Brackman is now a veteran and he pitches like one..often times out-smarting opposing hitters.
I know many of the fans are as excited as I am to get to see Mark Brackman throw again for the Gateway Grizzlies. 2011 figures to be a record-breaking year for him. He is closing in on numerous different career pitching records at Gateway. For the full release on the Brackman signing and the records he is chasing, check out the link below. Go Grizzlies!

As promised last week, here's my post on the Grizzlies most recent transactions. Gateway has re-signed right-handed pitchers Ryan Juarez, Sean Toler and Tyler Heil. Here's my thoughts, taking a look at each pitcher individually (All photos courtesy of Paul Baillargeon/ActionImaging.com).
Ryan Juarez: Ryan returns to GWY after being named the team's Rookie of the Year in 2011. He had a strong late July-early August, winning four consecutive starts during the span. Ryan was one of the hardest workers and toughest competitors I saw last season in the Frontier League. His finals numbers in 2011: 4-4 5.22 ERA 11 G 9 GS 50 IP 25 SO. I still remember Ryan's pro debut at River City..he came out of the 'pen and went right after the toughest lineup in the FL. Grizzlies Manager Phil Warren is looking for more consistency from Juarez in 2012..I think we'll see that.
Sean Toler: Sean pitched for GWY in 2010 before being traded traded away to Windy City. After finishing off '10 very strong with the T-Bolts, Toler started '11 with River City before being traded back to GWY. Toler showed glimpses on the mound, but it was clear he wasn't the same pitcher as he was in '10, and health was a big reason. Toler is still 24 and has one of the best arms on the Grizzlies staff...the biggest key for Sean in 2012 is to stay healthy. If healthy, we should see the '10 version of Sean Toler. He's expected to pitch out of the bullpen for Gateway.
Tyler Heil: Tyler will make the full transition from position player to pitcher in 2012. This is the first time Heil will be able to put his whole focus into his work on the mound. He tossed eight innings and recorded a 2.25 ERA in five appearances in 2011. Heil made a started on August 31st @ Florence, surrendering only two runs while striking out four in four innings. It's still unknown where Heil will fit into the pitching staff...even Phil Warren doesn't know. Tyler might start and he might relieve..he's the big question mark heading into camp. I'm excited to see the progess Tyler Heil makes with his focus solely on pitching.
GWY has signed some newcomers..I will introduce you to those new Grizzlies in the coming weeks. Go Grizzlies!

College Basketball Underway
Hello All! Last Thursday marked the beginning of the College Basketball season for me with McKendree University taking on Maryville University. That was game one of six games in three days for me, which included a thrilling 67-64 OT win in the season opener on Saturday afternoon for the SIUE Women's Basketball team against Valparaiso. Below is a link to my personal website, which has highlights of the game on the home page.
SIUE-Valparaiso Highlights
It was also a busy weekend getting the basketball season kicked off at McKendree University, where I thoroughly enjoyed watching Harry Statham's team play. It has been a joy getting to know Harry, who is one of the nicest coaches I have been around. He is the NCAA's all-time wins leader and coaching his 46th season at McKendree, yet he always has time to talk basketball with fans. He is a great coach and a great guy.
Monday night I got to experience something that was extremely neat for me. SIUE took on Illinois in the Cougars' 2011-12 Season Opener. Final score was Illinois 66 SIUE 46, but it was a single digit game late and the Cougars certainly held their own. It was an encouraging effort, especially for a season opener. I grew up watching Illinois on TV, but never had made a trip to The Assembly Hall. Therefore, the experience was a thrill. If I was there just simply as a fan, I know I wouldn't of had the same feeling. I was there as a broadcaster, alongside Joe Pott for the call on the SIUE Cougar Radio Network. It was a great moment in my young broadcasting career. It's one of those moments that motivates me even more to work hard and continue to improve so that one day I'm on that type of stage on a consistent basis.
Another busy week of College Basketball (and Professional Indoor Soccer mixed in) continues this week. Here's my broadcast schedule the rest of the week.
*Wed: SIUE WBB Play-by-Play vs. Ball State w/ pregame at 6:50 on the Cougar Network.
*Thurs: SIUE MBB Color Analyst @ Illinois St. (Cancun Challenge) w/ pregame at 6:50.
*Sat: Illinois Piasa Professional Indoor Soccer Play-by-Play vs. Detroit Waza @ 7:30.
*Sun: SIUE WBB Play-by-Play vs. UIC w/pregame at 12:50 on the Cougar Network.

Grizzlies Re-Sign Six Players
Hello all! If you keep close tabs on the Grizzlies official website (www.gatewaygrizzlies.com), then you are aware that the Grizzlies have signed six players recently. I'm extremely excited about each of the players re-signed..all six guys are quality players. I'm here to breakdown each player and give you an idea of what I expect from each player in 2012 and also a little bit of what Grizzlies Manager Phil Warren is looking for. Also, below is a clip from a late-season game in Marion when the Miners clinched a playoff berth. I'm confident next year I'll be making that call and say the Grizzlies are heading back to the playoffs!
MINERS WALK OFF AGAINST GRIZZLIES AT RENT ONE PARK
First off I'll start with the four pitchers signed.
Chris Enourato: Enourato (pictured right: all photos courtesy of Paul Baillargeon/ActionImaging.com) was the team's 2011 Pitcher of the Year. He led the team with 11 saves, tied for the team lead in appearances with 39 and was named to the Frontier League All-Star team. I'm a big fan of Chris and his ability on the mound. He won't overpower you, but he has impeccable command and great composure. He was a closer in college at West Virginia (and a very good one at that), but Phil has decided to put him in the rotation for next year. If the transition doesn't go well, Phil will move him back to the 'pen, but at least for now Chris Enourato is a starter. I'm intrigued by this move. Phil's reasoning is Chris has enough pitches to be a starter and he feels Chris going 6 or 7 gives this team a better chance to win and Chris a better chance to get noticed. We'll see how it pans out come May.
Richard Barrett: Richard was a bright spot out of the bullpen during the tough 2011 season. At times, he and Enourato were an outstanding 1-2 punch at the back end of the 'pen. Now, the skipper expects Richard to be a closer and dominate the end of games. He certainly has the talent to do so. Richard has some of the best stuff in the league. He is still young at 23 and his best years could very well still be ahead of him. Having Barrett and Derrick Miramontes at the end of games should be tough on opponents.
Paul Tremlin: Paul was a quality reliever in 2011 before being sidelined at the end of the season because of irritation in his elbow. Paul is only 22 and is another guy Phil Warren has decided to put in the rotation during camp. Paul is long and lanky, throws hard and showed good command as a true rookie. Paul Tremlin could very well have a breakout year in 2012. The ceiling is very high for him.
Jordan Cudney: Jordan had arguably the best finish to the season of any Grizzlies pitcher. He tossed an absolute gem in a spot start during the final weekend of the season (6ip 1h 0r 8so). Jordan was also throwing against the league's best offense, River City. He's another guy who will most likely be looked at as a starter. At least heading into camp, it appears the Grizzlies will have a ton of starters to look at, which is a good thing. Cudney is another young, powerful arm with a number of quality pitches.
Here's a look at the two position players signed by GWY.
Kent Gerst: Kent is a guy with Triple-A experience and has been in pro baseball for a number of years..but he is only 23. The upside is high for Kent Gerst. Phil Warren said he is hoping for a career year from Kent Gerst...I am as well. He is certainly capable of that, if healthy. He works hard and is a great guy off the field. Kent is a rare commodity in this league..he has hit for average, power and has displayed top of the league speed as well. If Kent gets off to a hot start next year and is signed by an MLB club early on, it wouldn't suprise me. If Kent comes to camp healthy, watch out.
Case Rigby: At 5-11 225 and seemingly no true position on the field, Case isn't your prototypical baseball player, but man did he have some kind of a season with GWY in 2011. .354 average in 24 games, which included 12 multi-hit games and nine RBI. He was fun to watch. Reminded me a little bit of Kevin Youkilis to tell you the truth. He wasn't flashy at 1B, but got the job done. Phil says he's interested to see what Case looks like in May when camp begins. He has some things to work on in the offseason fielding wise, but no one can deny how well he can hit. I think Case will be a big part of the 2012 club.
That's the outlook for the recent re-signings. It the next week, expect a release on the team website about the Grizzlies re-signing of Tyler Heil and Ryan Juarez. I'll also post my thoughts about those two guys coming back right here on my blog!!
192 days until Opening Day. In the meantime, contact me to get your season tickets ordered! Go Grizzlies!!

Grizzlies Schedule Released
The Gateway Grizzlies Schedule has been released (home game dates are pictured right). I won't go into a whole lot of detail just yet. After all, the season is still far away (200 days until opening day...of course I'm counting). Two new opponents join the Frontier League and the divisions are re-aligned for the upcoming season. Gateway will play four exhibition games and 96 regular season games. The new teams in the league are in Schaumburg, IL (nickname, the 'Boomers') and London, Ontario, Canada (no team mascot yet). I'm in the process of getting a passport so I can call those games...needless to say, I'm very excited about getting to go to Canada to call some games this summer.
Here's a look at the West Division, which GWY is still a part of.
Gateway Grizzlies
Normal Cornbelters
Joliet Slammers
Rockford RiverHawks
River City Rascals
Windy City ThunderBolts
Schaumburg Boomers
Gateway's first EXH game is at home on May 9th against Southern Illinois. That game gets underway at 11:35 A.M. The Grizzlies open up for good on May 18th against the reigning FL Champion, Joliet Slammers. GWY's first road trip takes them to Washington, PA and Canada May 22-27. No game times yet.

College Basketball Is Back
Hello all! This week marks the beginning of the college basketball season and I couldn't be any more excited! This will be an extremely busy college basketball season for me, serving as the Play-by-Play Voice for SIUE Women's Basketball, Men's Basketball Color Analyst at SIUE and the Public Address Voice for McKendree University. Basketball has always been my favorite sport. It's the sports I grew up playing religously and it has always been the sport where I feel I'm at my best when calling games. Here's to a great basketball season for the school's I'll be calling games for and my favorite team growing up, Saint Louis University. Here's my broadcasting schedule this week.
Tuesday: Public Address Announcing for McKendree Volleyball Senior Night
Wednesday: PA Announcing 'Meet the Bearcats Night' for McKendree Basketball
Thursday: Alongside Joe Pott for the SIUE Men's Basketball Exhibition Opener @ the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville. The game will be broadcast on 88.7 FM WSIE and www.wsie.com. KFNS will not carry either of the EXH games.
Friday AND Saturday: On the call of McKendree-Nebraska hockey on the Bearcats Sports Network. Tune in @ www.mckbearcats.com.
Sunday: I'll be at the McKendree Bearcats Tip-Off Dinner in O'Fallon, IL to help kick off the McKendree University Basketball season. Should be a great week!

Construction at GCS Ballpark: Bring on the Field Turf
Hello All! Things have been a little hectic (and noisy) at GCS Ballpark already this week. That's because construction is underway to replace the playing surface at the ballpark. The project started Monday (all pictures courtesy of Paul Baillargeon/ActionImaging.com) and the progess has been drastic in just two days. This is a very exciting time for the Gateway Grizzlies as the team transitions from grass to field turf. It's a move that has understandably received a lot of flack from fans. I, for one, am very excited about the switch. Sure, like any baseball fan, I like the real grass, but financially this is going to be a great move for the organization.
It's a BIG change. The Grizzlies will join a handful of team's in the Frontier League already using field turf and I'm excited to see how it looks when the project is completed. According to people close to the project, it should be finished around Thanksgiving time. If you want to see the construction first hand, stop by GCS Ballpark and check it out!

Livin' the Dream
Hello all! With the off-season now in full effect for the Gateway Grizzlies, some of my blog posts will turn to other topics, with the majority of the non-Grizzlies related posts about my broadcasting ventures in the off-season.
After graduating from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in May 2010 with a degree in Mass Communication and a minor in Speech Communication, I've been fortunate to land numerous different broadcast gigs. My main goal has always been to stay in the St. Louis market and broadcast the entre year...I wanted very little down time. All I've wanted was to get on the air as much as possible. I was hired by Gateway nearly a year ago (October 15th, 2010) and it has been amazing how much my career has taken off since then. I'm getting the chance now to work for Gateway full-time and also call games for Division II McKendree University and Division I SIUE. My schedule is full in the off-season, calling Volleyball, Soccer, Hockey, Basketball and Baseball at the two Universities. Below is the link to the release from the Sportscasters Talent Agency of America, where I'm a client, announcing my newest gig as Women's Basketball PxP Broadcaster at SIUE. STAA President/CEO Jon Chelesnik has been very influential in my career and he contiues to give me great exposure.
Young to call Women's hoops at Division I SIUE
At the age of 23, I'm extremely happy with the direction my career has gone already and I'm excited for what the future holds. Getting the chance to be the Voice of a Minor League Baseball team and call Division I basketball next to my hometown is a dream come true. The same day I graduated from college on a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon in early May at SIUE, my parents had a going away party for me at our home in Waterloo. I left for Fayetteville, North Carolina the next morning, one day after I received my college diploma. I set out to begin my post-college broadcasting career and I had no idea when/if I would ever broadcast close to home again.
Broadcasting jobs are hard to find, let alone anywhere near your hometown or right where you want to be. I'm blessed...I consider myself to be one of the fortunate ones. Everything has fallen into place and worked out better than I could have imaginged. This career can be fast..time flies when you are having fun and doing what you've always dreamed. Now it's time to sit back, enjoy the ride a little more than usual and realize how lucky I am.
I'm not done yet..I still have dreams to accomplish. This business can eat up a young broadcaster really quick. It's demading and challenging, but ever rewarding. I'm back on the call tonight. McKendree-Mid-Continent University Men's Soccer on the Bearcats Sports Network at 6:00, with a 5:45 air time. Right before I go on the air tonight, I'm going to quickly reflect and give thanks for everything that has been given to me. I'm a Gateway Grizzlie, a McKendree Bearcat and now an SIUE Cougar once again!

Analyzing Grizzlies-Rascals Blockbuster Trade
Hello all! If you follow the Grizzlies closely, I'm sure you have read and/or heard about the completion of the Grizzlies/Rascals trade, that began on August 4th with Logan Parker heading to River City. Last week, it became official that Charlie Lisk (Pictured below; all photos courtesy of Paul Baillargeon/ActionImaging.com) was the final Grizzlies piece heading to River City in a seven-person trade between the two teams.
On August 4th, Gateway traded Parker and a player to be named later to the Rascals for pitcher Erick Carillo and three player’s to be named later. Now, with the deal completed, the Grizzlies receive pitchers Zach Robertson and Derrick Miramontes, former Grizzlies position player Chris McClendon, a 2012 first round draft pick and a player to be named later.
Here's Manager Phil Warren's take on the trade;
“Overall, It’s a very fair trade and we feel like we received four quality players and a first round draft pick for 2012. With us out of the playoff hunt and Logan retiring, we essentially acquired five pieces for one. We are extremely excited with the way it turned out.”
Lisk leaves Gateway as the team’s career leader in games played, at-bats, runs scored, total bases, hits, home runs and RBI. The Wentzville, MO native began his Gateway career in 2007. He is coming a 2011 season where he hit .294 with 24 homers and 94 RBI, both tops in the Frontier League. Lisk is 28-years-old. BUT, this deal is much more complicated than what most believe think. Charlie lives in Wentzville, MO, which is MUCH closer to O'Fallon, MO then Sauget, IL. He will save a ton of money on gas going to and from the ballpark. Financially, this is a good move for Charlie and one that makes sense. In my time here, Charlie was nothing short of outstanding. His numbers speak for themselves. I can understand why people are upset and confused, but as the Voice of this baseball team, I think the Grizzlies come out on top. Logan Parker (Pictured Below) has retired, which Gateway knew he would do when they dealt time (hence him being traded to a winner for one more shot at a championship). Charlie will put up great numbers once again in 2012, I believe...but, the Grizzlies received a ton of talent in return..let's analyze this deal.
“Derrick’s numbers tell the story,” Warren said. “He is one of the top flight relievers in the Frontier League and a legitimate back-end guy.”
“Chris is a spark plug and will fit in nicely at the top of our order,” Warren said. “He is an outstanding third baseman and one of the key parts of the trade.”

Robertson finished 2011 with a 9-4 record and a 4.50 ERA for the Rascals. He appeared 26 times, starting 12 games. The 6-1 195 left-hander from Des Moines, IA struck out 77 batters in 88 innings pitched. Robertson, 23, was drafted in the 30th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Florida Marlins, where he went 1-2 with a 5.06 ERA. He is a product of the University of Iowa.
“Zach is a solid, consistent lefty who will begin the season as a starting pitcher for us,” Warren remarked. “He made big strides since entering professional baseball in 2010 and is really starting to come into his own.”I have liked Robertson ever since he stifled Gateway in a late-June start at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. He will fit in very nicely into the Gateway rotation. He has a veteran demeanor, going right after hitters. Robertson throws pretty hard, touching the low-90s. He is also versatile..since college he has been bouncing back and forth between the bullpen and rotation. Like Phil said, as of right now, he will begin the season as a starter.
Miramontes, 24, enjoyed his second straight impressive season with the Rascals in 2011, earning his first Frontier League All-Star selection. He finished with a 9-2 record and a 2.21 ERA out of the bullpen for River City. Miramontes pitched in 44 games, all relief, collecting 17 saves. A 5-10 180 pound right-hander from Durham, CA, Miramontes went 3-3 with a 2.19 ERA and five saves in 44 relief appearances in 2010. He is known for using multiple arm angles during his outing’s to keep hitters off balance. “Derrick’s numbers tell the story,” Warren said. “He is one of the top flight relievers in the Frontier League and a legitimate back-end guy.”
Miramontes has to be the most unique pitcher in the league, displaying numerous different arm angles and speeds on his pitches. At times, he can be unhittable. He struggled down the stretch in the regular season, including the final series with GWY, and that carried over to playoff struggles. Hopefully that doesn't carry over to 2012. I talked to Phil Warren last week and he expects Derrick to be a back-end of the bullpen guy for the Grizzlies, but not necassarily a guy who gets all the save chances. Returner Richard Barrett will probably get save chances next year as well.
The final piece of the deal is McClendon (Picture right: GREAT photo by the talented Paul Baillargeon/ActionImaging.com), an infielder, who will come to Gateway for a second go around. McClendon, 24, only appeared in seven games for the Grizzlies in 2009. The 5-11 190 pound Lufkin, TX native helped the Rascals collect the 2010 Frontier League Championship, batting .279 and stealing 33 bases. In 2011, McClendon battled injuries, but still managed to hit .332 with four home runs in 56 games. He played his college ball at the University of Kentucky. “Chris is a spark plug and will fit in nicely at the top of our order,” Warren said. “He is an outstanding third baseman and one of the key parts of the trade.”
Some people around the Frontier League said the best player on River City in 2011 was Chris McClendon. On a team FULL of talent, many considered him to be the most important piece to the puzzle. That is saying something! Smooth with the glove at 3B, Chris will bat at the top of GWY's order (either first of second) and be as valuable as anyone in 2012. He stole over 30 bases in 2010, batted over ..330 in 2011 and still has upside. Phil Warren told me "I knew he was going to be a great player when we had him during 2009"...but an injury plagued 2009 season with GWY, and he wasn't invited back in 2010 (Donnie Ecker played 3B for GWY that year). Chris McClendon is considered by many to be the centerpiece of this deal for the Grizzlies..if he's healthy, expect All-Star (maybe even MVP) type numbers for McClendon.
Phil Warren is hard at work building his 2012 roster..is there a chip on his shoulder? Maybe...he's competitive and as hungry as any Manager I have come across. He hates enduring 40 (2009) or 39 (2011) win seasons and wants to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2008. I like this deal a lot..yes, I hate to see Charlie go. If you know me, it was no secret that Charlie was one of my favorites..for many reasons. He is a heck of a player and he never was shy around the microphone (a broadcaster's dream). Charlie-good luck at River City..Robertson, Miramontes and McClendon-welcome to Gateway..time to bring a Championship back to Sauget!

2011 Gateway Grizzlies Season In Review
Leading up to the 2011 season, hope and promise was surrounding the Gateway Grizzlies baseball team. With a solid blend of returners and newcomers, talent was up and down the Gateway roster, but as they say, ‘you don’t win games on paper.’ The Grizzlies never found a groove and stumbled to a 39-56 record, their lowest win total since they won only 34 games in 2002.
Gateway jumped out to an early 10-5 record and appeared to be destined for plenty of success. With third-year Grizzlie Mark Brackman (All pictures in this story, courtesy of Paul Baillargeon/ActionImaging.com) and hyped newcomer Aaron Shafer anchoring the starting rotation and a loaded batting order, the Grizzlies endured two four-game winning streaks and won eight of nine from late May to early June.
Gateway sent their second player to affiliated ball in mid-June when Ryan Khoury was signed by the Boston Red Sox. It was Khoury’s second go-around with the Red Sox, who released him in the 2011 Spring Training after he spent 2006-2010 with them. Khoury batted .320 with five home runs during his stint at Gateway and excelled upon his return to the Red Sox organization, finishing the year at Triple-A Pawtucket.
On the pitching side of things, Gateway struggled once again on the mound, posting the third worst ERA in the Frontier League at 5.16. Brackman led the Grizzlies pitching staff for the third consecutive season, inching closer to numerous Grizzlies career pitching records. Despite a month long absence due to a right foot injury, the Grizzlies ace right-hander amassed seven wins and finished with a league-best 2.15 ERA, while tossing three complete games. Brackman’s stellar first half of the season earned him a spot on the Frontier League All Star team. He was the only Grizzlies pitcher to eclipse 100 innings.
Warren completed his 5th season and with the team’s 39 wins, he moved into 8th place all-time in Frontier League Managerial wins.
Gateway finished third in the league in attendance, barely being clipped by Traverse City for second place. 166,072 fans came through the gates at GCS Ballpark for an average of 3,610. The final attendance total helped mark the ninth straight year in which the Grizzlies averaged over 3,600 fans. A franchise record 8,189 fans came through the turnstiles on Sunday, September 4th for the ‘Greatest in Baseball’ as the Grizzlies fell to the River City Rascals in the final game of the 2011 season.
Already getting the itch for Grizzlies baseball again. I'll keep you posted on offseason happenings. Thanks!

Shafer, a former second round pick of the Chicago Cubs, lasted only two starts with Gateway before a big league club came calling. The Atlanta Braves purchased Shafer’s contract and placed him at High-A Lynchburg, where Shafer shined. The Moscow Mills, MO native finished the season at Double-A Mississippi.
Despite the hot start, June is when the wheels started to fall off. Gateway suffered a 9-19 record during the month of June, their worst monthly record during the season. Dropping back in the standings, the Grizzlies were never able to recover. The Grizzlies never collected a five-game winning streak during the season, winning four in a row three times, but never five in a row.
With the team all but out of the playoff chase in early-August, Grizzlies Manager Phil Warren began making roster moves. The first move made by Gateway was a blockbuster trade, involving star slugger Logan Parker. Gateway traded Parker and a player to be named later to River City for pitcher Erick Carillo and three players to be named later on August 3rd.
Gateway followed up the Parker deal with another trade on August 9th. This time the Grizzlies sent outfielder DJ Fitzgerald to Windy City for a player to be named later. Two days later the Grizzlies shipped fourth year Grizzlie Brandon Peters to Joliet for outfielder Jett Hart. The Grizzlies finished the season with a roster that was drastically different than opening day. Only eight players from opening day finished the season with Gateway.
The Grizzlies offense shined once again in 2011. Finishing second in the league in runs scored and home runs, Gateway was led by Charlie Lisk, Joe Agreste and Landon Hernandez, three mainstays throughout the 2011 season.Playing in his fifth year with Gateway, Lisk had another remarkable season, earning his fifth Frontier League All-Star selection. The Wentzville, MO native batted .295 with 24 homers and 94 RBI, both tops in the Frontier League. At season’s end, Lisk was the Gateway Grizzlies career record holder in games played, at-bats, runs scored, total bases, triples, hits, home runs and RBI. Lisk is also the Frontier League career leader in home runs and RBI. He was named the Grizzlies team MVP for the third consecutive season.
Agreste had a consistent and productive 2011 campaign. A 2009 member of the Grizzlies, the Chesapeake, VA native spent 2010 in the Padres organization, before returning to Gateway. Tying a franchise single-season record with 94 games played, Agreste hit .291 with ten homers and 71 RBI. Agreste set a new single-season franchise record for at-bats, notching 378, en route to his first ever Frontier League All-Star selection. Hernandez had the most up and down season of the three Grizzlies offensive strongholds. After a blistering start to the season, the second-year Gateway catcher ran into a mid-season funk, before finishing strong. Landon’s end of the season production earned him a spot on the Frontier League Post-Season All Star team. Hernandez batted .250 with 18 homers and 46 RBI, while proving he was the top defensive catcher in the league, throwing out over 40 percent of attempted base stealers. He was named Gateway Grizzlies fan favorite at the end of the season awards ceremony.
Three rookies came to Gateway late in the season and helped the teams finish strong in August. Clovis, CA native Case Rigby made the biggest impact of the three. Batting .354 with nine RBI in 24 games, Rigby was one of the hottest hitters in the Frontier League down the stretch. Derek Jennings and Jett Hart came to the Grizzlies from the Seattle Studs of the Pacific International League and played in all 21 games to end the season, batting at the top of the Grizzlies order in each game. Jennings drove in nine runs while Hart homered three times and drove in ten.
Brackman was the only member of the starting rotation to start and finish the season with Gateway. While Shafer was picked up by the Braves, the other members of the Grizzlies start of the season rotation, Josh Whitlock, B.J. Dail and Adrian Garza, were all released.
Blake Barber and Ryan Juarez, both true rookies, made key contributions to the Grizzlies straight out of college. Barber, a Missouri State product, finished 4-3 with a 4.92 ERA. Juarez, a product of Cal State Northridge, went 4-4 with a 5.22 ERA and was named Grizzlies Rookie of the Year. The Grizzlies bullpen was bolstered mid-season by the addition of two rookies. Right-handers Paul Tremlin and Jordan Cudney enjoyed a good start in the professional ranks. Tremlin appeared ten times and finished with an ERA just over four, prior to missing the final weeks of the season due to right elbow irritation. Meanwhile, Cudney shined in the bullpen before notching a spot start on the second to last game of the season. In that start, Cudney threw six shutout innings, allowing only one hit. He finished 2011 with a 1-1 record and a 2.67 ERA.
Nick Walters, JR Boling and Chris Enourato started and ended the season with the Grizzlies, adding stability to the bullpen. Walters, in his second season with Gateway, compiled a 2-1 record and a 2.81 ERA. Boling, who battled injuries throughout the season, appeared 20 times and posted an ERA just over four. Enourato started the season as a middle reliever, but quickly took over the role of closer, where he saved 11 games. Enourato was named the Grizzlies Pitcher of the Year.
The Grizzlies will look to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2008 when the 2012 season gets underway in May. The Grizzlies will also be searching for their first Frontier League championship crown since 2003.

Grizzlies Gear Up For Final Series in 2011
Hello All! Crazy to think the season is coming to an end this weekend at GCS Ballpark! The Grizzlies are getting set to begin a three-game series tonight with rival, River City. The Grizzlies are playing some of their best baseball this season, winners of four in a row, and fresh off a sweep of Florence. The Grizzlies have won four in a row for the first time since June 2-5 and the recept sweep was their first since June 3-5 @ home vs. Rockford. Tonight, Gateway looks to make it five in a row, which is something they haven't done all season! Below are some notes heading into action tonight against the Rascals:
*Joe Agreste is chasing down some Gateway records. Joe is currently six at-bats away from tying Charlie Lisk for most at-bats in a single-season (373 AB; 2010). Agreste has 108 hits, five away from Lisk's single-season record (113, 2010). Finally, if Joe plays all three games this weekend, he will have played in 94 games during the season, tying Greg Isaacson for first all-time (94).
*Charlie Lisk is six RBI away from tying Pete Pirman (Kalamazoo: 100 RBI in 2006) for most in a single-season in Frontier League history.
*Gateway looks for their first winning streak above four games in the 2011 season.
Pitching matchups this weekend:
Tonight: GWY RHP Brad Stone vs. RCY RHP Josh Lowey (2011 Frontier League Pitcher of the Year)
Saturday: GWY RHP Jordan Cudney (first professional start) vs. RCY RHP Zach Sterner
Sunday: GWY RHP Mark Brackman (1.93 ERA; lowest in the FL) vs. RCY RHP Preston Vancil
Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Grizzlies trying for the Sweep Tonight
Hello All! After a rough 1-5 road trip through the Chicago area, the Grizzlies have come home and played some impressive baseball in front of their home fans. After a 13-5 drubbing of the Southern Illinois Miners on Tuesday night (second place: Frontier League West Division), the Grizzlies came-from-behind to take down Southern last night. It was a dramatic win for Gateway. After trailing 7-2, the Grizzlies chipped away at the deficit and entered the ninth inning down 8-6. In came Miners closer Clayton Dill, who had yet to surrender a run in 2011..that didn't bother the Grizzlies though. Gateway collected some early hits in the inning, tied the game on an RBI walk for Johnny Aldaz, and won the game on an RBI walk for Brian Harris. What an ending it was in Sauget!! Here's my radio call, as heard on1400 AM KJFF, an affiliate station on the Gateway Grizzlies Radio Network. Click the link below.
GRIZZLIES WALK OFF AGAINST MINERS

Peters and Fitzgerald Traded
The Gateway Grizzlies have made a pair of trades during their current six-game road trip through the Chicago area. Before game three with Joliet, GWY traded outfielder DJ Fitzgerald to Windy City for a player to be named later. Then, early Friday, the Grizzlies announced they had traded veteran outfielder Brandon Peters to Joliet for outfielder Jett Hart.
Fitzgerald was hitting above .300 and doing a nice job since coming to GWY from the Cubs organization. It's still unknown who Gateway will get in return, but I feel like Phil Warren and his coaching staff will get a great talent in return.
Peters (Pictured Right: Courtesy of Paul Baillargeon/ActionImaging.com) has been with Gateway since 2008 and there is no doubt he has been a key face of this organization. As Phil Warren has said repeatedly, 'he plays the game the way it's supposed to be played.' It has been a true joy covering 'BP' over the years. He was as well-liked as anyone in the clubhouse and he produced every season @ GWY. An All-Star in 2010, Peters wasn't putting up 'BP' like numbers in 2011, but he was still playing well and working hard every day. I speak on behalf of the Grizzlies Organization when I say he will be sorely missed. Phil Warren made this move out of respect for Brandon, trying to help him win a championship w/ Joliet.
Best of luck to both Fitzgerald and Peters!

Road Trip Update: Grizzlies Struggling In The Chicago Area
Hello All! Hope all is well wherever you are! After taking two of three from Windy City over the weekend @ GCS Ballpark, the Grizzlies have stumbled so far on the road trip, going 0-4. With that said, Gateway has really battled on this trip and there has been some exciting finishes. Here's some info on those exciting finishes.
*Tuesday night: Gateway lost to Joliet 7-6. GWY had runners on first and third with no outs, yet still couldn't push across a run.
*Wednesday night: Gateway lost to Joliet 7-5. GWY left runners on first and second to end the game.
*Friday night: Gateway fell to Windy City 5-3. GWY had runners on first and second with no one out and couldn't push a run across, ending the game with runners on second and third.
The Grizzlies are 0-35 when trailing after seven innings. The Grizzlies are the only team in the Frontier League that hasn't come back from a deficit when trailing after seven. The Southern Illinois Miners, the comeback team of 2011, has seven wins when trailing after seven.
The Grizzlies have two games left on the road trip before having an off day on Monday and returning back to GCS Ballpark on Tuesday for a six-game homestand. A pair of newcomer's will start for GWY, with RHP Erick Carillo going on Saturday and RHP Nolan Shaffer on Sunday.
Some positives from the road trip:
*Case Rigby has been a FINE addition for GWY at first base. The California native can flat out mash, and he also plays a solid first base. I'm excited to watch Case play the rest of the season and hopefully beyond.
*Kent Gerst (Pictured right: Courtesy of Paul Baillargeon/ActionImaging.com) has started to heat up. The O'Fallon, MO native went 2-for-3 tonight with a Solo HR and 2 RBI.
*Gateway continues to stay competitive..every game during the trip has been close. Let's see if GWY can start to take a couple of these close one's!
